A Message to Garcia was published in 1899 originally as an inspirational essay. The essay was translated into 37 different languages and sold over 40 million copies. A Letter to Garcia was also made into a movie twice (once in 1916 and again in 1936).
The Spanish-American War was fought in Cuba during the essay and it was a war for Cuba to gain independence from Spain. The main characters in Hubbard’s essay are Rowan, Garcia, and President McKinley. Garcia was a revolutionary trying to gain independence from Spain. Rowan was an army officer that graduated from West Point in 1881. President McKinley was the 25th president and was sadly assassinated by an anarchist during his second term. The tallest mountain in North America was actually named after President McKinley up until 2015.
